Hexham Abbey
another stunning success |
Lizzie Owen taking a school workshop |
We thought that Blackburn Cathedral would be a
hard act to follow, but the show at Hexham Abbey proved to be
equally successful - a beautiful setting, thousands of visitors,
excellent school workshops and a wonderful choral evensong
service which celebrated diversity in the world using the Golden
Tapestry as a shining example |

|
Midlands schools predominated in a display generously
hosted and sponsored by ICHF at their Sewing for Pleasure'
show in the NEC, Birmingham from 29th March to 1st April. More than 30,000 people attended the show and we
had a constant stream of admirers viewing the Golden Tapestry
each day. One visitor had grandchildren attending two of the
schools on display, Bluecoat School in Stamford, Lincolnshire
and, rather more remarkably, Wodonga Primary School in Victoria,
Australia.

Blackburn Cathedral proved to
be a perfect venue and the exhibition from 13th September to 1st
October 2006 prompted an enthusiastic reaction from everyone,
school parties, the public and, not least, everyone at the
Cathedral, who organised a special schools' event, schools'
workshops and a service of celebration. All quite brilliant. |

We should like to thank the Dean
and Chapter of the Cathedral Church of St Mary the Virgin,
Blackburn for kindly hosting the exhibition and Lancashire
County Council and Blackburn Diocesan Board of Education for all
their wonderful help and support. |

The programme of major exhibitions has got off to a flying
start with a a brilliant show in Melbourne for the XVIII
Commonwealth Games. We were able to show the work of around 250
schools from 31 different countries in the two venues, each
display illustrating a year in the life of the Commonwealth
through the eyes of its children. The countries represented were
Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cameroon, Canada, England, the
Falkland Islands, The Gambia, Grenada, Guernsey, India, the Isle
of Man, Kenya, Malawi, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Namibia, New
Zealand, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, Pakistan, St Helena, Scotland,
Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Wales
and Zambia.
An estimated 31,870 people came to see the Golden Tapestry,
including many school parties, athletes, government ministers and
officials from different countries, visitors to the Games and
Melburnians. The response from the visitors can be summed up by
some of their comments in the visitors' books:
"Seeing our school's tapestry amongst all the fabulous
entries from around the Commonwealth was truly fantastic. What a
great exhibition...thanks for allowing us to view them. They are
all so wonderfully unique and brilliant."
Frances and Ruby,
Kunyung Primary School, Victoria
"An inspiring exhibition showcasing
the imagination of the young people of the Commonwealth."
Senator Mike Vibert, Minister for Education, Sport and Culture,
States of Jersey
"Only the innocence of children can
show us the true beauty of our world. Well done children!"

Thank you." |

the exhibition to Melbourne, Cathay Pacific Airways, who took
us to Melbourne, GlaxoSmithKline who have enabled
more than 150 schools to take part and above all the countless
