 The Golden Tapestry

WHAT THE GOLDEN TAPESTRY IS ALL ABOUT

While looking through this section of the website you will see this logo in several places. When you do then simply hover you mouse pointer over it to see some very special "fast Facts".

The Golden Tapestry celebrates Her Majesty the Queen's 50 years as Head of the Commonwealth. It is designed to bring together the first generation of primary school children in the 21st Century, and to give them a voice to express what being part of the Commonwealth means to them.

Schools in every Commonwealth country and territory are being invited to contribute to a story that will cover a year in the life of the Commonwealth and describe what different aspects of their lives the children would most like to show Her Majesty. It will be a dazzling celebration of diversity. The briefs all reflect the principles that unite the Commonwealth, underlining peace and friendship, understanding and cooperation. In each country we are seeking to involve schools and groups of children representing every community, every faith and every tradition.

There are 54 full member nations of the Commonwealth. However, if you include the associated states and dependencies where there are schools, you have a total of 76 countries. We hope to have schools in all 76 taking part in the Golden Tapestry. The project has the support of the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Royal Commonwealth Society, the Commonwealth Foundation, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London and the governments of many Commonwealth countries, provinces and states. The Golden Tapestry is being organized cooperatively by offices in different countries throughout the Commonwealth.

We now have approaching 700 schools signed up in 45 countries: Anguilla, Australia, Bangladesh, Botswana, Brunei, Cameroon, Canada, Cyprus, Dominica, England, the Falkland Islands, The Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guernsey, India, the Isle of Man, Jamaica, Jersey, Kenya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritius, Montserrat, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, Pakistan, St Kitts and Nevis, St Helena, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Scotland, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Tristan da Cunha, Uganda, Wales and Zambia. About 150 schools have already completed their work, and you can see the canvases from more than 100 of them in the Virtual Golden Tapestry, many with the schools' own descriptions alongside.

The first display ever of the Golden Tapestry was a preview of just nineteen canvases as part of an exhibition for the Coronation Day Children's Party at Buckingham Palace on 2nd June 2003. Her Majesty the Queen was delighted with the progress of the Golden Tapestry and remarked on the wonderful ingenuity of the children's work. Another preview was displayed at the Youth CHOGM in Leicester on 28th November 2003 and larger displays have been mounted in the British Museum in London on 9th October 2004 and at the Commonwealth Fair in Kensington on 5th and 6th November 2004. The first major exhibition was at thecentre:mk in Milton Keynes on 4th to 12th May 2005. You can see details of these shows in the News and Events page.

By the end of 2005 we should have several hundred completed canvases and are planning major exhibitions around the Commonwealth up to at least the end of 2007. We hope to be able to announce some more venues soon, so keep visiting the website.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN THIS AMAZING PROJECT?

We are looking for around 1,800 schools or groups across 76 countries. Some schools are receiving invitations and we are looking for others to contact us. These will be admitted to the project on a first-come-first-serve basis within each country or region within a country. If you would like to join or to receive more information, please contact us by e-mail on goldentapestry@btinternet.com.

Please note that, because the organization and logistics costs of such a worldwide project are very high, there is a registration fee of £177 (UK Pounds 177) per school. So, if you need help, talk to your education authorities or education business partnerships - or ask local or national businesses to sponsor you. If you are unable to find sponsorship yourself, do contact us, as we are often able to match sponsors to schools.

THERE ARE NO IMMEDIATE DEADLINES FOR JOINING THE PROJECT OR FOR COMPLETING WORK, AS THE EXHIBITIONS WILL TAKE PLACE OVER A PERIOD OF THREE AND A HALF YEARS. SO THERE ARE NO TIME PRESSURES ON SCHOOLS TAKING PART.
