The young people of Milton Keynes celebrating its
40th Anniversary

Milton Keynes was designated a new town on 23rd January 1967 and in 2007, its 40th anniversary, schools were invited to take part in an arts project which has resulted in a huge tapestry recording the city's history, celebrating its present achievements and envisioning the shape of its future.

The MK40 Vision Tapestry is a vibrant celebration of Milton Keynes through the eyes of its children and young people and is made up of squares of textural embroidery representing all the local areas within it. It can be displayed sequentially on a three-metre high display system, but equally - in the right venue - it can be configured in the shape a map of Milton Keynes. Each school has been responsible for creating one of the squares, and has portrayed what they want people to know about their area.

The result is simply breathtaking.

Already fifty schools have completed their work and we are awaiting the contributions from a further five. You can see many of the individual canvases in the Virtual MK40 Vision Tapestry, which is growing to include the work of all the schools taking part.
